Whoever said things can change quickly in footy wasn’t wrong. Pre-season premiership favourites Richmond will go in as underdogs against Port Adelaide on Saturday. In fact, you’d probably have to go back to early in the 2017 season to find the Tigers at such long odds.

Port Adelaide are coming off their first loss off the season, although you can hardly blame them for losing to a white-hot Brisbane. The Power have been ticking all the right boxes this season, leading the AFL in contested possessions and clearances and ranking second (behind the Bulldogs) for inside 50s. They’ll be sweating over the status of midfield bull Tom Rockliff after he was concussed against his old team on the weekend.

Richmond have lost two in a row, but that’s not the worst of it. The Tigers could potentially go into Saturday’s match missing all of their best four players. Alex Rance is already confirmed out for the year and Jack Riewoldt is out for a month. Compounding that, Dustin Martin faces a two-match ban for an off-the ball strike during last weekend’s loss to GWS, and there are clouds over Trent Cotchin’s fitness.

In one of those quirks of the AFL fixture, this is the fourth straight time these clubs will meet at Adelaide Oval. Port have won two of the last three, and they handed Richmond one of their four losses in the home and away season last year.
