Adelaide United welcome runaway leaders Sydney FC to Coopers Stadium on Sunday evening in the final game of the weekend’s A-League fixtures.

The Reds and the Sky Blues were both crowned A-League Premiers and Champions in 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively, with Sydney already looking just about nailed on to defend their Premiers title this season and worthy bookies favourites to be overall champions again.

Adelaide currently lie fourth in the table, but are a full 17 points adrift of the table-toppers after a rare midweek round of A-League fixtures, during which the Reds drew 1-1 away to Western Sydney Wanderers thanks to a late equalizer from substitute Apostolos Stamatelopoulos.

Meanwhile Sydney’s fine form continued with a 3-0 win away to Brisbane Roar, a result that leaves them eight points clear of Newcastle Jets in second spot.

The teams met in league action barely six weeks ago at Coopers Stadium, when a goal from Bobô on the stroke of half-time proved sufficient for Sydney to claim all three points.  The veteran Brazilian striker is in a rich vein of form, having added nine goals in six matches since then to take his tally for the season to 15.

Just 10 days prior to this season’s league encounter, the teams also met in the final of the FFA Cup, with Sydney again prevailing.  On this occasion they required extra-time before winning 2-1 at the Allianz Stadium, with that man Bobô again scoring the decisive goal.

In their three A-League meetings last season, there was a goalless draw at the Allianz Stadium, but then the Sky Blues showed their dominance with a 4-0 win at Coopers Stadium and a 2-0 back in Sydney.  That’s the last four A-League meetings in which Adelaide have failed to register a goal against Sydney.
