Atlantic Jewel Remains Unbeaten At Caulfield
September 02, 2013
Undefeated mare Atlantic Jewel produced another impressive performance to land the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday 31st August.
The Coolmore owned five-year-old smashed a field of top-class rivals with ridiculous ease, finishing 2-1/4 lengths clear of Australian Guineas winner Ferlax who went off at a price of 21.00. Atlantic Jewel’s stable-mate Super Cool ran home impressively for third at 17.00 while 5.00 second favourite It’s A Dundeel was far from disgraced in finishing fourth without a clear run.
The race looked open until the half way stage when jockey Michael Rodd asked for an effort entering the straight and from that point the result was never in doubt as 2.20 favourite Atlantic Jewel made a winning return from a 70-week injury layoff to delight her trainer Mark Kavanagh. The Melbourne Cup-winning handler has said their are plenty of options for his superstar with online bookmaker Sportingbet quoting 3.20 about Atlantic jewel in Cox Plate betting.
The other leading contenders for the Group 1 showpiece on October 26th are P.B. Lawrence Stakes winner Puissance De Lune who has eased to 6.50 following Saturdays result, while Its A Dundeel can be backed at 7.00 and may be worth chancing if the Australian Derby winner can get a clear run at Moonee Valley.
